Chapter Twenty-Seven

“Care to comment on your relationship with Henry Yang?” a woman’s smooth voice purred from behind Sandra.

She was suddenly filled with a sense of dread. She probably should have expected to get this specific question tonight. Why she thought for a minute that she might escape the reach of the hungry press at a political fundraiser seemed silly now.

Collecting her thoughts, she spun around to face the reporter when a wave of relief rapidly washed over her.

It wasn’t just any reporter.

It was Zoe Rush of the Portland Press Herald, a frizzy-haired, fiery, tiny ball of energy, and a former classmate of Sandra’s at Bates College. Zoe was a friend first, a reporter second.

Sandra relaxed. “We’re registered at Tiffany’s if you want to buy us some sterling-silver salt and pepper shakers,” she deadpanned.

Zoe cracked a smile. “A romantic dinner in New York City. You certainly do get around, Sandy.”

“That whole night was his idea. I was totally taken by surprise. I couldn’t exactly tell him to take me home when we pulled up on the tarmac next to a private jet.”

“Well, congratulations. You and the ubiquitous Mr. Yang are trending on Twitter.”

“I know.” Sandra groaned.

“What are you planning to do about your sudden turn in the spotlight?” Zoe inquired, leaning in closer.

“Off the record?”

Zoe nodded.

“I’m still trying to figure it all out. I like Henry. He’s got some opinions that worry me, but he’s a decent guy from what I can tell. He certainly loves his son and would do anything for him. I’m just not sure how I fit into his life or how he fits into mine.”

“And how does Stephen feel?”

“You know him well enough to already know the answer to that,” Sandra said with a wry smile.

Zoe thought about it for a second before nodding in agreement. Then she stepped back to inspect Sandra’s cocktail attire. “Pretty dress. Looks expensive. How much did that set you back?”

Sandra glanced down at her red sheath number. “I like it. I don’t remember how much I paid for it.”

Zoe grabbed the sides of her own outfit. “See, that’s how different we are. I can tell you exactly how much I spent on this Jaclyn Smith black velour dress I got off the rack at K-Mart. Twenty-nine ninety-eight plus tax.”

Sandra laughed. “Well, you look lovely in it. Now, what about you? Are you seeing anyone?”

Zoe scoffed. “Um, no. According to my ex-boyfriend, not only does he find me too abrasive and annoying to be around, most men in general, at least the ones he knows, are of the same opinion. And because women don’t do it for me, although for some reason most people automatically assume I’m a lesbian, I’ve decided to date myself.”

Sandra raised an eyebrow. “And how does that work?”

“Saturday night is date night. I cook myself a meal, relax with a bottle of wine and just chill with a movie. I have to say, I find myself utterly charming and fun to be around.”

“I think I might really enjoy that.
